About the project

"Voice of Stone" is a philosophical and mystical art project by Ida Iris that invites us to see the familiar anew, weaving symbolic and semantic connections between the ordinary and the ineffable. Through this work, the silent language of stones becomes audible, challenging our perception of the mundane and revealing a deeper dialogue with the mineral world that surrounds us.

I invite you to look at the ground. Every day, countless stones lie beneath your feet. In the countryside, they scatter along roadsides, rest on hills, border rivers, and line the seashore. In the city, they endure in cobblestones, the plinths of historic buildings, park sculptures, and monuments.

These stones are silent… until you truly see one. Pause. Observe. Focus on a single stone, and the universe itself seems to open before you. In that moment, the stone begins to "speak."

It does not speak with words, but through the subtle signs engraved upon its surface — a quiet, ancient language waiting to be discovered.

The signs on a single stone can be seen as a subjective voice, one that sparks curiosity. Yet that curiosity may vanish instantly under a skeptical glance. But when we observe the signs across a hundred stones, a coherent structure emerges — a pattern that cannot be dismissed as trivial. Within this structure, a system becomes visible, built from recurring signs, images, and a unified figurative language.

We know that rocks are highly structured, with intricate crystal lattices — an example of natural order. Yet the surface of a stone, with its diverse patterns, reveals the essence of what might be called "chaos." Scientists who study stones can explain their colors, relating them to chemical composition and crystal structure. The world of stones has long been examined through the lenses of mineralogy and gemology, and stone has been widely used in architecture and art.

These, however, are examples of stone as a structure, as order. My exploration sought something different: the "chaos" of the stone, its signs. In this pursuit, I encountered an entire series of enigmatic, unusual, and captivating signs.

Imagine the scale of all the stones in the world. Imagine the countless signs upon them, hidden from our view. Could we ever gather all the stones and "read" them? And if we could, what might we learn?

The universe resides in every stone. It does not speak in words; it speaks in signs.

How does this work in practice?

Initially, when I started this art theme, I aimed to find and analyze a number of signs and images of stones, considering them from an artistic and utilitarian point of view. Which is basically what I did. However, the results of my research were quite unexpected for me. To my surprise, I found repetitive signs on different stones, and I also noticed that the figurative language of stone signs has its own unique features and even themes. I had the idea that all the stones seemed to tell a single story. But this is the subject of additional research.

The world we live in is very multifaceted, I would even say multi-layered. Sometimes poles of the same level are so far apart that they do not appear to be objects of the same plane. It's the same with stones. Stones are not only structural elements of space, they are also the essence of the manifestation of the multi-layered chaos from which order is formed. By multi-level chaos I mean their tendency to be scattered (as opposed to their tendency to gather into mountain ranges and massifs or man-made structures), their tendency to "speak" in signs inherent in their surfaces, and their ability to accumulate and transmit information, that is, to interact with space on an energetic level. It is likely that modern man has lost the ability to interact with the stone at the level that was available to the creators of Stonehenge. However, I think that paying close attention to stones, to their nature today, can open up a deeper understanding of the essence of this world tomorrow. Then, what we consider unimportant or mysterious may become the key to understanding important moments in the development of civilization. In the meantime, we understand that the stones are what came before us and will remain after us even when we are gone.  So let's listen together to what the stones "say"...

I hope you will be surprised.
